Melbourne Ports Electorate

The Melbourne Ports electorate is located in inner metropolitan Melbourne. It covers an area of 43 square kilometres. See the map. There are almost 89,000 residents enrolled to vote in the electorate.

History

The Melbourne Ports electorate has existed since Federation in 1901. It has been held continuously by the Australian Labor Party since December 1906. Since then it has been held by five successive Labor members: James Matthews (1906-31), the Right Honourable Ted Holloway (1931-51), the Honourable Frank Crean (1951-77), the Honourable Clyde Holding (1977-98), and Michael Danby.

Ted Holloway was a leader of the anti-conscription campaign during the First World War and was Minister for Health, Social Service and Labour and National Service in the Curtin and Chifley governments.

Frank Crean was Treasurer and Minister for Trade in the Whitlam Government was Deputy Prime Minister in 1975. Clyde Holding was Minister for Aboriginal Affairs in the Hawke Government

In the past Melbourne Ports was based on Port Melbourne and Albert park and was a safe Labor seat. Today it extends to St Kilda, Elwood and Caulfield, and is a marginal seat. At the 2004 election Melbourne Ports had a Labor majority of 3.6%.
