Danby and Labor humbled by Federal Election result

Following the election of a Rudd Labor Government on Saturday November 24, Melbourne Ports MP Michael Danby, returned with an increased margin, said he was ‘humbled’ and ‘energised’ by the mandate given to Kevin Rudd and his team both locally and throughout the country.

“Our excellent result in Melbourne Ports, with improvements in key areas such as Caulfield, Caulfield North and Balaclava, is gratifying. It highlights the importance of working hard for our community and being part of a skilled Labor team led by Kevin Rudd.

Our significantly improved showing in pre-poll and postal votes, a telling indicator of the voting preferences of the Orthodox community, also reflects the hard work I’ve put in to advancing the interests of schools in our community through pushing for a fairer funding deal and ensuring the federal Government meets the security costs of our schools.

I am tremendously proud to be part of a Rudd Labor Government, and will continue to work hard representing our community in Canberra. I will be joined by Mark Dreyfus QC, the new Member for Isaacs, in a Government led by firm, unwavering friends of Israel. Kevin Rudd and Labor will take a leading role in the international campaign against Iran’s nuclear proliferation through the International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice, with former Canadian Justice Minister and Attorney-General Irwin Cotler arriving in Australia soon, helping to develop Australia’s role in this campaign against nuclear proliferation and genocidal threats.

After over a decade of the Howard Liberal Government promising to deliver a better deal on schools funding, and failing to do so once the electoral dust had settled, the community can now look forward to me working within a Rudd Labor Government which will live up to its promises to end unfair funding arrangements for schools in our community and to lighten the load with security costs.

I take pride in representing such a challenging and diverse electorate, and make no apologies for advancing the interests of our community- I applaud Kevin Rudd in his promise to govern for all Australians.”
