Reports online in the Herald Sun- following on from reports in political blog The Other Cheek- have today demonstrated that at the core of the Victorian Division of the Liberal Party beats an anti-Semitic heart. Mr Danby said he was in political conflict with Mr Held during the election campaign but felt sorry for him given he has been the subject of such prejudice from within his own party.
In emails published on ‘The OC' and dated 19 October 2007 between sacked Liberal staffer John Osborn and Ms Chandler, the Liberal candidate for Melbourne Ports at the 2007 federal, Adam Held, is referred to as a ‘greedy f***ing Jew', following an enquiry from Held as to whether more campaign material would be available for him to distribute in the electorate.
Given the outrage expressed by the Victorian Leader of the Opposition and his allies concerning the authorship of the blog ‘hewhostandsfornothing.blogspot.com', surely outrage must exist on his part at the blatantly offensive, gratuitous and snide attack on my former opponent on the basis of his religion. However, instead of sacking a senior official whose anti-Semitism had been uncovered, State President Professor David Kemp and State Leader Ted Baillieu decided to focus on the clearly more pressing issue of dealing with their factional enemies.
While there are many in the Liberal Party who are friends of the Jewish Community in Australia and indeed friends of Israel, this sort of behaviour by a senior campaign official working for the Victorian Division of the Liberal Party is spun from the same thread as the renowned anti-Semite and serial candidate Adrian Jackson, who was expelled by the Liberal Party for expressing such racist views. That the recipient, sacked Liberal staffer John Osborn, merely suggested that such comments should not be put in writing, rather than expressing outrage, indicates that such views must be accepted within the upper echelons of the Victorian Liberal hierarchy.
Given Ted Baillieu and Professor Kemp did not act immediately to sack Chandler and publicly apologise to Adam Held for these unforgivable comments, the Victorian Liberals have demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that they, and not just their leader, do indeed stand for nothing.
