DANBY WELCOMES NEW
SOUTH MELBOURNE CENTRELINK:
“A VICTORY FOR
THE LOCAL COMMUNITY”
Michel Danby, federal MP for Melbourne Ports, has welcomed the news that South Melbourne Centrelink will not be closed, but will instead be moved to new premises in York St, South Melbourne.
“When I heard reports some months ago that the South Melbourne Centrelink office was again in danger of being closed because its lease was expiring, I made it clear that this was unacceptable, and that the office was necessary to meet the needs of the community in South Melbourne, Port Melbourne and Albert Park, and particularly the Russian-speaking community,” Danby said.
“I wrote to the Minister, Mr Hockey, and later had a meeting with him in Canberra at which I made this point to him – just as I made the same point to his predecessor, Mr Anthony, in 2001. I’m pleased that good sense and the interests of the local community have prevailed, and that new premises have been found. This is a great victory for the Melbourne Ports community,” Danby said.
“The new Centrelink office will be at 94 York St, South Melbourne and should be ready in time to provide a smooth transition of services to Melbourne Ports residents.”
