NATION BUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE

The Government has delivered $22 billion in investment in nation building infrastructure - in our roads, rail, ports, in clean energy and in universities.

ROADS, RAIL & PORTS

The Budget delivers an $35 billion investment in our roads, rail and ports, including:

Building Australia Fund

The Government is delivering $8.5 billion in new road, rail and ports infrastructure, including as part of our response to the Infrastructure Australia National Priority List. 

  • - This includes funding for the preconstruction work on the East West Rail Tunnel (shared with neighbouring electorates)

Heritage

$250,000 has been committed to the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) for the restoration of the Rippon Lee Grotto.

  • - The project will improve public safety and allow it to be opened to the public for the first time in 20 years.

Financial Assistance Grants

$451 million in Financial Assistance Grants funding will be provided to local Councils in Victoria.

  • - Funding for each of the 79 Councils in Victoria will be announced in August 2009.

HEALTH

Health & Hospitals Fund

The Budget delivers $3.2 billion to invest in hospitals, cancer care and medical research infrastructure, including:

  • - $13 million for a tissue banking facility for the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria (SHARED with neighbouring electorates)

SUPPORTING THE ECONOMY

PENSION REFORM

As part of the budget, the Government has announced an additional $16 billion for substantial reform of the pension system over the next 4 years.

Under this reform, the Government has delivered an increase of $32.49 per week to full rate single pensioners, and $10.14 per week to couples pensioners, effective from 20 September 2009.

  • - This will benefit 9,277 pensioners in Melbourne Ports.

This historic pension increase will include recipients of the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment.

Carer Payment recipients will also receive an annual supplement of $600 and Carer allowance recipients will receive an annual payment of $600 per person cared for.
