Australian Foreign Affairs Subcommittee Chair offers Google special parliamentary hearing on cyber attacks
Michael Danby today requested that Google come before a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee, of which he is Chair. The meeting was requested following reports that Google will stop censoring its search results in China and may pull out of that country completely after discovering that computer hackers have been interfering with Google products in order to seek information about human rights activists.
"As Google Chief Legal Officer David Drummond rightly stated in his blog on the subject, these attacks have security and human rights implications, and "go to the heart of a much bigger global debate about freedom of speech". A major power interfering with email products that many Australians use on a daily basis has obvious foreign policy implications, and as such is an area of interest to the Australian Parliament's Joint Standing Subcommittee on Foreign Affairs" Mr Danby said.
"Reports of interference with email accounts and other intrusions on privacy will be worrying to those Australians who have been critical of the Chinese Government's attitude towards human rights" Michael Danby said.
