Michael Danby
Federal Member for Melbourne Ports

The Member for Melbourne Ports Michael Danby today welcomed the opening of 27 new apartments which will provide more affordable rental accommodation in Port Melbourne.

The 22 studio and five one-bedroom apartments are supported under the Gillard Government’s National Rental Affordability Scheme, in partnership with the Victorian Government and the City of Port Phillip Council.

“The Gillard Government understands that housing affordability is a significant issue around the country and Port Melbourne is no exception,” Mr Danby said.

“Through this development, eligible people can rent their home at a discounted rate of at least 20 per cent below market rates while freeing up other rental properties in the area.

“I would like to thank the Port Phillip Housing Association for their involvement and management of the facility.”

Mr Danby said the Gillard Government is committed to addressing housing affordability around the country.

“Since coming to office, this Labor Government has invested a record $20 billion to help people with home ownership, affordable rental housing, and to tackle homelessness,” Mr Danby said.

“These apartments have been delivered as part of the Government’s $4.5 billion investment to increase the supply of affordable housing across the nation through National Rental Affordability Scheme.

“The National Rental Affordability Scheme is delivering affordable private rental housing, encouraging private investment in innovative affordable housing and reducing rental costs for low and moderate income households.

“This scheme supports the supply of 50,000 new more affordable rental properties across Australia, allowing eligible households to save thousands of dollars every year in rent.

"In Victoria alone, more than 6,800 affordable rental homes will be supported through the National Rental Affordability Scheme.”

The Scheme which is delivered in partnership with State and Territory governments provides annual financial incentive payments to business sector and community organizations to build and rent new homes at a minimum 20 per cent below market rate.
