Labor does not want people risking their lives in a boat. However as Bill Shorten has just announced, it is plainly idiotic to bar future business travellers or tourists from other countries who after officially being declared refugees become citizens of other countries such as the US or Canada.

Moreover, while Malcolm Turnbull is increasingly appearing to be a “hollow man” version of the hard-line former PM Abbott, he is also advocating that we sign the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP).

One clause of the Trans Pacific Partnership deals with the free movement of people between countries.

“Nothing in this Agreement shall prevent a Party from applying measures to regulate the entry of natural persons of another Party into, or their temporary stay in, its territory, including those measures necessary to protect the integrity of, and to ensure the orderly movement of natural persons across, its borders, provided that those measures are not applied in a manner as to nullify or impair the benefits accruing to any Party under this Chapter.”

The Turnbull government is advocating one thing while it plans to sign a Partnership agreeing to do the opposite!

Turnbull and Dutton seek to ban those from Nauru and Manus Island FOR EVER, but at the same time urging the Australian Parliament to sign a TPP which guarantees the free movement of people.
